Explore and Create Your Own 3D City with Free Models and Resources
ArcGIS CityEngine is advanced 3D modeling software for creating massive, interactive, and immersive urban environments in less time than with traditional modeling techniques. The cities you create using ArcGIS CityEngine can be based on real-world geographic information system (GIS) data or showcase a fictional city of the past, present, or future. Bring the powerful procedural city generation of ArcGIS CityEngine into your favorite tools for urban design using its many integrations.

In this case, the procedure is a little more complex than the terrain itself and more tools need to be used. To get the model, we use the CADMAPPER web tool, which uses freely available maps from OpenStreetMap as a source. The tool allows you to download a 3D model up to 1 km area for free. Larger areas are paid. In most cases, 1 km is perfectly fine. By covering the entire print area (25 x 21 cm), we get the ideal scale for the model (approximately 1: 4000 to 1: 5000).
The downloaded file is not yet fully prepared for slicing. What we need to do is to create an object under the terrain. In addition, we can simply change the height of buildings in this tool, especially those that have a default value from CADMAPPER. We will use SketchUp Pro for editing, which is free to download in the trial version.
Vertical orientation is also not suitable for printing city-building models, because almost every building would have a perimeter wall parallel to the print surface and therefore the model would be non-printable without supports.
What software do I need to print with the Lulzbot Taz 6 or Lulzbot Taz Workhorse? If you are looking to create your very own object, you will need to do so through a 3D modeling software such as TinkerCad, SketchUp, SolidWorks, or Autodesk Maya; otherwise, you can simply download models made by the community from free online databases such as Printables.com or Thingiverse.com. Once you have a 3D model, simply download and use the free software, Cura.

Does anyone have a 3d model of the city of Los Angeles that I could use?? Or know of where I could possibly find one for free online. If not, does anyone know if its possible to save a whole city in Google Earth and import it into Sketchup??Much appreciated.
Not too long ago we released our Modern Cityscape Collection which is an incredible kitbash product with 27 modern skyscrapers & buildings, 150 bonus models to populate your city & 3 completely built out city skylines.
All the modeling tools used were free (no cost, or available as a trial) for basic functionality. Except Visio which I just used for sizing some optional satellite imagery. I used an FDM style printer.
Well, there comes a time where you have all the knowledge and resources for your 3D-printing activities, but no time when it comes to designing or redesigning your STL models. Luckily, you can download free STL files from a variety of great sites. Most are free while others offer their work for a price. Some even have the option to order the model to be printed and then get it sent straight to you!
The best part about these STL file downloads would be the sheer variety available as 3D-printing has gone mainstream. Below is a list featuring some great sites that we use to find free STL models. Enjoy!
Set up in 2012 to build up a community-based 3D model online repository, this French-based site has grown to offer both free and paid downloads. It was among the first to offer models created with any of the major 3D creation tools, further supporting VR and AR on compatible hardware. This site is easy to navigate using the search feature and to better navigate through the sheer volume of STL files available, they have been grouped into convenient categories. Be warned that you may end up spending more time at this Sketchfab site than you may have planned to as there are just too many choices offered.
While this is technically a marketplace, Pinshape is a thriving community which make available quirkier models that range from Star Wars-inspired miniatures to jewelry. The free models are displayed along with clearly-marked paid pieces, so you can easily distinguish them or you can simply spend hours browsing and admiring the creativity which went into all these pieces.
This United States government agency for biomedical and public health research offers scientifically accurate or medically applicable models for download. The STL file collections include face shields and low-cost prosthetics, plus models of various human organs for education and research purposes. Especially interesting are the DNA molecules and virus models, so you can get a closer look at these microscopic objects.
The award winning 3D City Database is a free geo database to store, represent, and manage virtual 3D city models on top of a standard spatial relational database. The database schema implements the CityGML standard with semantically rich and multi-scale urban objects facilitating complex analysis tasks, far beyond visualization. 3DCityDB is in productive and commercial use for more than 14 years in many places around the world. It is also employed in numerous research projects related to 3D city models. The 3D City Database comes with tools for easy data exchange and coupling with cloud services. The 3D City Database content can be directly exported in KML, COLLADA, and glTF formats for the visualisation in a broad range of applications like Google Earth, ArcGIS, and the WebGL-based Cesium Virtual Globe.
A semantic 3D city model of the German capital Berlin is freely available to the public as open data in CityGML format, which contains around 550,000 LoD2 building objects within the whole city area (890 km).
The Chair of Geoinformatics at Technical University of Munich has created the first publicly available big semantic 3D city model of New York City (NYC) derived from existing public 2D, 2.5D, and 3D datasets automatically.
The 3D City Database contains the semantically rich all-purpose city model based on CityGML. This base data can be exported in different 3D visualization formats and styles to meet specific customer needs.

Love this tool, it saves me so much time for a game I run it's unreal. I would say that for my use case (generating a large city map that needs to be consistent for my players) it can be very difficult to get smaller maps of individual sections of the larger city. A fully zoomed out .png is great for an overview, but the fine details which come through fine in the generator are lost even at the highest resolution download available, and I generally have to resort to recreating the layout by hand which is rather tedious, especially since the generator renders down to that level of detail already.
Where to find 3D models? Many websites now provide a large number of free and high-quality 3D models to help all 3D creators save time and effort. However, not all 3D models you found are quality guaranteed or free for personal usage!
